WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF GASTROPARESIS?

There are a number of factors that can cause gastroparesis, including:

  • Diabetes: Diabetes can damage the nerves that control the movement of food through the digestive system.
  • Surgery: Surgery, especially surgery to the stomach or small intestine, can damage the nerves and muscles that control the movement of food.
  • Certain medications: Some medications, such as narcotic pain relievers and antidepressants, can slow the movement of food through the digestive system.
  • Infections: Infections, such as cytomegalovirus (CMV), can damage the nerves and muscles that control the movement of food.
  • Connective tissue disorders: Connective tissue disorders, such as scleroderma and amyloidosis, can damage the muscles of the stomach and slow the movement of food.
  • Idiopathic gastroparesis: In some cases, there is no known cause for gastroparesis. This is called idiopathic gastroparesis.
